Leiden is coming to a still. The rising living costs have pushed many young artists out of the city; only a few remain. There is little interaction between locals and the university, which has high walls. The image of Leiden as a lively student city persists, but on the ground it can read as detached, and closed.

What Have We Here? takes stock of the situation. It asks, what is actually here? Its museums, collections, heritage and institutions celebrate history, but where does that leave young contemporary art?

Over the summer months, TROEF will function as a live shared, makeshift studio for participating artists, where they come together to work collectively on a series of interventions within and beyond the exhibition space. These interventions aim to meet the city and its people as it is, rather than how it is represented. Through installations, performances, and actions, they engage directly with the city, its rhythms, and its gaps, looking for ways to interrupt, connect, and reanimate.
